There were big smiles all round when Middleton Hall was announced the overall winner in the Best of Darlington 2014 Award Category, Contribution to the Environment.  Nominated by Councillor Doris Jones, Middleton Hall were one of three finalists in this category and nominated for its vision and company philosophy to respect the environment and reduce its carbon footprint.

The most important development in this vision has been the creation of the first carbon neutral retirement properties in the UK, “The Waterside”.

Other initiatives include a working group of employees & residents who meet regularly to suggest ways in which the company can become even “greener” – initiatives such as transport sharing & cycling to work are rewarded with meal vouchers to promote sustainable living. The philosophy of our estates team is to re-use, re-cycle and re-build.

Jeremy’s vision was also acknowledged at the Green Build Expo 2013 for industry professionals where he addressed the conference.

The winners were kept well under wraps until the Presentation Evening held on Friday March 21st at the Atruim, Darlington College. Jeremy was delighted to collect the Award from Kate Culverhouse, Chief Executive of Groundwork, main sponsors of the Category.

Jeremy commented “I am delighted to collect this Award as it recognises Middleton Hall’s visions and efforts to develop an environmentally responsible and sustainable organisation and community.”
