Never ones to shirk a challenge, Middleton Hall residents, friends and staff responded energetically to the five week ARCO Miles Better campaign that culminated in the Wellbeing Weekend of 18-19th September.
Team Middleton Hall pulled together to cover the initial aim of 874 miles – the equivalent distance of John O’Groats to Land’s End by any physical means including walking, cycling, swimming and running. We achieved this in just three weeks and decided to turn around and go right back up to Scotland! There was just no stopping us and we eventually made it to the Shetland Isles. We eventually clocked up an astonishing 2,502 miles.
Residents and staff were inspired to use all our facilities, including the Middleton Spa gym, pool and extensive grounds and to measure activities that contributed to the distance. All contributions were equally valued, from a challenging walk along a corridor by some to a cycle ride by others. Literally every step counted.
The nationwide campaign was initiated by ARCO, the Associated Retirement Community Operators. The purpose was to raise awareness of the evident health benefits experienced by retirement village residents. Up and down the country, retirement communities such as Middleton Hall set themselves challenges that demonstrate such advantages.
The Wellbeing Weekend was the conclusion to our achievements. The highlight for many was the Cycle Challenge when residents and staff pledged to cycle the final 194 miles of the journey. There were also opportunities to enjoy an exciting programme of activities both favourite and new and for all residents whatever their mobility. There were taster sessions of Tai Chi, Aerobics Gold, Water Aerobics, a table tennis tournament, a guided Woodland Walk around the grounds, Indian head massage and paraffin wax therapy treatments.
To support the Wellbeing Weekend, our Photography Group held an excellent exhibition of photographs that reflect the Living Well ethos at Middleton Hall.
All in all, a job well done!
