Stepping out the Wright way

June 2014

Christine WrightChristine WrightA Grandmother in her seventies has raised funds for The Alzheimer’s Society by completing a triple marathon walking challenge.

Keen rambler Christine Wright, Middleton Woods resident, set herself the task of completing 26.2 miles per month as part of the series of health challenges our residents and staff are taking part in to raise funds for the charity.

Christine completed the walks, averaging around nine miles each, with friends from the Darlington Ramblers’ Association and Countrywide Holiday Association and rambled across countryside in Swaledale, Cleveland and Wensleydale.

The grandmother of five completed the 78.6 miles over the course of three months, including 40 miles in March alone, and personally raised over £300 for The Alzheimer’s Society, which is our chosen charity of the year.

Christine’s triple marathon bid was part of Middleton Hall’s ’26.2 Challenge’ which has included managing director, Jeremy Walford, running the London Marathon in April; Living Well manager, Audra Hunt, completing a 26.2m run in the swimming pool with other members of staff taking up the challenge to lose 26.2 pounds.

Christine, who moved to Middleton Hall Retirement Village with husband Peter from Morpeth, Northumberland, two years ago, said: “When Jeremy threw down the gauntlet to staff and residents about the 26.2 Challenge I thought, what can I do? I love walking and it has huge health benefits so I decided to do three marathons over three consecutive months. It meant that I had to go out whatever the weather but it was a labour of love and a joy to do. I feel fitter now then I ever was and I do believe it’s because I keep exercising, particularly going to the Middleton spa and the gym.”

The fundraising challenge was part of our Living Well philosophy which encourages and supports residents to enjoy maximum health and wellbeing through exercise, social events, workshops and healthy meals.

Jeremy Walford, managing director of Middleton Hall, said: “It’s fantastic that Christine took up this challenge. She has so much energy and puts most people half her age to shame with her ‘can do’ attitude. The 26.2 challenge has proved really popular with both staff and residents. They’ve really got behind it and come up with their own initiatives to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.”
