Italian Cricketer’s Bowled Over with Support for Charity Walk

April 2015

IMG_9068The sun shone on residents and staff as they joined Italian Cricketer, Alessandro Sabelli on the local leg of his 690 mile charity walk from John O’Groats to the London Royal Marsden Hospital.  The keen walkers set off from Middleton Hall Retirement Village to accompany Alessandro as he embarked on the 14th day of his month long journey.

Walk for ResearchThe charity walk is to help support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and all proceeds will be donated to the Royal Marsden’s Oak Centre for Children and Young People with the hopes of building a recreational gym.

The ‘Walk for Research’ star Alessandro and his fellow companion, Peter Sherry who are hoping to raise £5000  were thrilled to have the company of residents and staff on their 20 mile leg from Middleton St George to Northallerton.

Although the main target of the charity walk is to raise donations, Alessandro also set out to encourage others to challenge themselves, stating “Perseverance is a great tool when it comes to facing struggles, whatever shape or size they might come in. I would like to show that even though things may get tough, there is always someone, somewhere, cheering you on!”

Neil Bunting, Director of dé Salve, one of the sponsors and main supporters of Alessandro’s quest drove the support vehicle and was available for residents and staff who needed a well-earned rest for those tired legs.  dé Salve is a company which Middleton Hall are working closely with to provide innovative monitoring techniques to encourage residents to live well and follow an active lifestyle.

Audra Hunt, Living Well Manager said “It was a privilege to join Alessandro and Peter on this leg of their journey, helping them raise money for such a worthwhile cause. Our residents had a great time ‘talking while walking’ with Alessandro. It certainly made the miles they put in go a lot quicker.”
